Practical TestTo take your test you must produce both your photocard and paper counterpart of your license, without these you will not take the test. You will then be asked a combination of show me tell me safety checks. After entering the car the examiner will tell you to follow the road ahead unless signs or road markings say otherwise, and if he wants you to turn he will tell you in good time. Test routes are designed to be as uniform as possible and will include a range of typical road and traffic conditions. There will also be an independent driving part to the driving test. You may be asked to follow the signs and road markings to reach a certain destination, or asked to follow some simple diagrams of a route, or a combination of diagrams and road signs. During the test, the examiner will ask you to carry out 1 reversing manoeuvre, choosing from the following:
You will be asked to pull up on the left in a safe and convenient place several times during the test, and then asked to drive on when you are ready. This is to check that you pull up on the left with due regard for other road users using your MSM routine, where you stop is safe and covenient for you and other road users, and that when you move off you do not affect other road users, with control and appropriate all round observation including blindspots. This may be done on a hill to check your hill starts, or you may be asked to pull up behind a car to check that you can move off at an angle safely and with full control. You may be asked to do an emergency stop, only 1 in 3 tests will be asked to do this Throughout the test you should drive in the way your instructor has taught you. If you make a mistake, don't worry about it, it might be a less serious driving fault and may not affect your result. The examiner is not looking for a perfect drive, he will be looking for an overall safe standard of driving.
